By Lauren Macaluso

This film, in all it’s American, underdog glory, is pretty much exactly what we all need right now: It’s good to be reminded just how possible it is to fulfill one's dreams. Bob Kearns (Greg Kinnear), a professor who has been working his entire life to invent something astounding, shows us how it’s done. When he finally invents a workable intermittent windshield-wiper, he works with his partner, Gil (Dermot Mulroney), to have it patented and manufactured. Ford Motors gets wind of his invention and immediately shows an interest -- not an interest to help Bob manufacture it, of course, but an interest to steal his idea. The fight for the invention spins out of control, leaving Bob’s wife , Phyllis (Lauren Graham), and kids caught in the middle, watching hopelessly from the sidelines as Bob's life falls apart. The film is almost entirely pitched on the shoulders of Kinnear, whom, in previous roles in films such as Little Miss Sunshine and As Good As it Gets, has played soft-spoken and humorous, the character that everyone wants to give a hug. But here, he’s dedicated, forceful, and doesn’t give a damn what you think. Director Marc Abraham is able to take this true story and create a film that proves a man can give up time, love, and family for something he believes to be his life’s ambition. Aside from a few bad '70s-era hair pieces, the film looks great, flying high on the well-written, well-researched script by Philip Railsback from an article by John Seabrook. Abraham and his team prove that a film entirely based on wind-shield wipers can be just as absorbing and moving as any other excellent drama.
