By Kevin Pearson

There's always been an anthemic sense of impending doom to The Walkmen's tightly wound tunes. Even when they loosen up a little, as they do throughout You and Me, there's an underlying sense that something's not quite right. The upbeat refrain from the raucously clattering "In the New Year,” might state "I know it's true, it's gonna be a good year," but it is only believable because Hamilton Leithauser's impassioned vocals imply that the optimism is due to an unfortunate prior 12 months. On the subtle opener "Donde esta la Playa” he backs this theory up by singing, "Last Christmas was black and blue, but this year is white." Then again, The Walkmen do have good reason to feel upbeat. Through its first nine songs, especially the off-kilter "Canadian Girl" and the mournful, horn-adorned "Red Moon," You and Me is one of this year's best releases. Unfortunately, the album does tail off towards the end ("The Blue Route" actually sounds like driving on the uninteresting stretch of road that links Philadelphia to Allentown). These latter songs aren't bad per se, they just pale in comparison to the front end, which is strong enough to guarantee the group a good year. (Gigantic)
