By Scott Hesel

The latest addition to this franchise displays such a depth to the game play and fluidity to the controls that there’s barely much to say about it.  Sure, the Story Mode is extremely short and a little weak, but if you buy fighting games for the story, then you need psychological testing.  Most of your favorite characters from previous incarnations of the game have returned, and they are well-balanced as usual.  Where this title shines, however, is the custom character mode.  With the ability to build your fighter from scratch and unlock weapons and moves as you progress, this game adds a deeper experience to the button-mashing arcade fest that constitutes so many fighting titles. In addition to the character creation option, the graphics and controls are up to the usual standard of the franchise. This stands out as the premier fighting title for the Xbox 360.

 GAME PLAY: 8.9

This edition lives up to its previous standards of solid control mechanics.

 GRAPHICS:  9.0

The character animations and background environments are excellent.

 SOUND:  7.2

The grunts and taunting sound fine, but the music errs a little bit on the side of “generic fighting game”.

 VALUE:  8.8

With the custom character creation, about as good as you’re going to get for this genre.

 OVERALL:  8.9

Lives up to the quality of the franchise.
