Yi Gwak (Woo-sung Jung) is your typical demon-slayer hero who finds himself stuck in Mid-heaven, a place where dead souls come to prepare for reincarnation. Now enter So-hwa (Tae-hee-Kim): a former lover of Yi Gawk’s, who has become a White Reaper, a guardian and protector of Mid-heaven. From So-hwa, Yi Gawk learns about the struggle over the Holy Stone, a rock so powerful it could tear Earth and Mid-heaven apart. The conflict is that So-hwa has been assigned to protect it and her evil enemy, Ban-chu (Jun-ho Heo), wants it to gain control over Mid-heaven. Although this film is a mixture of both fantasy and love, the film’s plot lacks in originality, having ripped off several of The Matrix fight scenes; (does two characters flying in the air with swords sound familiar to you?). However, the graphics from the film are enchanting, and with little creativity anywhere else, this is one of the only features viewers can appreciate. The love story between Yi Gawk and So-hwa is comical; So-hwa’s only redeeming quality is her helplessness, which requires Yi-Gawk to come to her rescue every time (even though she’s the one that could potentially destroy both Mid-heaven and Earth). This film may remind viewers of Lord of the Rings and The Matrix, but The Restless is just a knock-off in a line of martial arts wannabes.
Bonus features include a commentary by the director, “The Making of the Restless,” and a production design featurette.
