Futurama: The Beast With a Billion Backs

By Piers Marchant

If the two "Futurama" movies have taught us anything, it's that TV-comedy-series-to-movie adaptations can work -- the writers just need to think of large enough concepts to warrant the feature length (are you listening, Darren Star?). As far as big stories go, how about a giant orb of a space alien (voiced by the incomparable David Cross) from another universe, who uses its billions of tentacles to try to impregnate everyone in our universe -- does that do anything for you? It will if you're a fan of the show and its madcap mash-up of sci-fi parody and societal satire. Before the alien orb gets its mack on with our universe, though, there are a great many other things that happen, including a gross-fest swamp gas wedding for two principle characters; an appearance by a world-famous scientist ("Welcome, I'm the pickled head of Stephen Hawking"); and "pre-flight coffee enemas" for all. When the show is cooking, which is not infrequently, it hits you pell-mell from all directions, but it's also smart enough to make you care, at least a bit, for its characters, which is what separates it from, say, "Family Guy" and that ilk. As a good deal of the show's humor is character-based, you can better accept the giant leaps of logic (and proportion) the writers often perpetrate. Speaking of characters, most of your favorites are here, including the hysterical, William Shatner-inspired Zapp Brannigan ("I'm being steamed in my own velour") and his miserable sidekick, Kif. At 90 minutes, the film holds together reasonably well, though one gets the sense if they'd pushed it to 95, they might have been in trouble.

The disc comes with a few notable extras, including commentaries, a "making of" piece and a "blooper" reel of some of the talented voice actors screwing up their lines.
