By Michael Feldman

There is no doubt that the sound and the style of the 20th century’s most lavish decade is back with a day-glo vengeance. Neon Neon’s album Stainless Style is an electro love-letter to those shiny days of decadence that strikes it rich when it steers clear of '80s cliches. The group’s members, Gruff Rhys and Boom Bip, reach euphoric heights on inspired and fresh sounding tracks like the post-apocalyptic, instrumental “Neon Theme,” the bluesy sky-flying ode to the future of automotive transport, “Dream Cars” and the chrome-plated hip-hop bounce of “Trick for Treat.” However, songs like “I Told Her on Aalderon” and “Michael Douglas” rely too much on pop-culture gimmicks and recycled retro sounds, leaving them lacking any long-standing charm. Stainless Style is a well produced, entertaining album that is both glamorous and cheesy -- but like the decade it pays homage to, it sometimes suffers from its own narcissism. (Lex Records)
