No Age

Nouns

By Michael Feldman

At the heart of No Age’s debut album Nouns, lies a classic pop album. It may not always be clear, especially underneath the blankets of noise and in between the minimalist guitar noodling, but it’s there… and it’s epic. Far more accessible than their compilation of 7”s and EPs, this series of catchy and cryptic teenage dramas blow by you with the power of all indie-rock that came before them. The goal of songs like the full-throttled “Teen Creeps” and “Sleeper Hold” is not songwriting perfection, just beauty through intensity. On the other side of the coin, instrumentals like “Keechie” and “Impossible Bouquet” are the valleys to Nouns’ mountainous pop anthems. The great thing about these beautifully textured excursions is that they never become overwhelming or incessant, but rather ensure the album’s overall dynamism. The sound of Nouns is nothing groundbreaking or new, but that may be it’s greatest asset. It remains down to earth, even as it reaches monumental heights. (Subpop)
