Karl Lagerfeld is a Licensing Whore
by Max McCormack
Loading slideshow…First it was the collection for Macy's (well actually H&M, but we won't go there), then the news of a Lagerfeld-designed watch collection for Fossil. Now news has broke of a beauty line for mass-market retailer Sephora. The Chanel and Fendi designer will launch a line of color-coordinated make-up products, using his own silhouette to decorate the palettes. A little self-indulgent, no? He's Karl, he's allowed.
I mean, I'm all for making some Benjamins, but this is getting ridiculous. The genius behind some of the world's largest luxury brands is degrading is own brand. Should Lagerfeld be remembered as an exclusive, luxury-driven, guru or a man of the mass market consumer?
