Galliano's Out at Dior

by Max McCormack
The Dior designer was ousted for anti-Semetic remarks.

After a gossip-filled week, Dior has officially ousted its Creative Director John Galliano. The firing comes after serious allegations involving the couturier's anti-Semitic comments. A cell phone video was release by The Sun, a British tabloid, showing the designer saying things like "I love Hitler" and "Your mothers and forefathers would have been gassed." Dior CEO Sidney Toledano said in a statement, "We Unequivocally condemn the statements made by John Galliano which are in total contradiction to the long standing core values of Christian Dior." In addition Natalie Portman, the face of Dior Cherie perfume, has publicly denounced the designer.

According to WWD Dior still plans on showing the Fall/Winter 2011 collection this Friday as scheduled. The one person who hasn't weighed in yet is Vogue EIC Anna Wintour, who was instrumental in Galliano's appointment at the legendary French house. Of course, rumors are flying that the luxury conglomerate LVMH, which owns Dior, orchestrated the whole thing. It really is a shame as Galliano was a visionary, producing spectacular and imaginative haute couture and pret-a-porter season after season. Some people nail their own coffin.

Now the question on everybody's mind is 'who's next?' Personally I would love to see Jason Wu at the house. he's you, fresh, and his designs are precious and feminine. Mickey Boardman, Editorial Director of Paper Magazine, tweeted yesterday that he'd like to see Alexander Wang. Other tweets mentioned Christian Lacroix and Haider Ackerman.

UPDATE: Galliano released a public statement saying, "I unreservedly apologize for my behavior." In the statement he claims to have been provoked and threatened, which led to the designers revolting remarks. It sounds like a whole lot of PR BS to me.
