Blog: Rachel Roy & The Man Repeller Put a New Spin on a Romantic Holiday
by Passion RutledgeIt's getting close to that time of year where every single girl goes and hides under a rock. Fear grips her on her daily commute. Each step brings her closer to pending doom. You may not even be the type of woman that feels like she needs someone but when love is always in the air, it's hard not to breathe it in. No need to worry. Rachel Roy and blogger Leandra Medine (alias: The Man Repeller) have teamed up to empower and style women this Valentine season with a rather--quirky--campaign.
Whether you're going on a blind date, just getting over a break-up, or you have so many suitors you have to beat them off with a stick, the Man Repeller has the vogue solution you need to keep the men at arms (maybe even legs). If you're less familiar with Leandra, her claim to fame is a knack for finding fashionable extremists. On her blog, she playfully test the bounds of every fashion rule you know. Gone are the days of "no white after labor day," the Man Repeller lives by a simple philosophy: "more is more."
Quite honestly, I didn't really know how I felt about the campaign off break. The videos are cute but I just didn't get the whole man repelling thing. Over styling yourself just for the sake of NOT getting attention seems a little counterproductive. But Rachel Roy told Harper's Bazaar "Dressing for yourself and not a man is definitely something I advocate. You should always feel confident in everything you wear, no matter what trend you fit or don't fit into. I tell girls all the time that the men that have fallen in love with me, have all fallen during a man repeller stage...funny how life works out like that." (See Harper's whole interview with Rachel & Leandra here.)
And then it was pretty clear, I had completely missed the point. Both Rachel Roy and Leandra Medine are simply encouraging women to take bigger bites out of life for the sake of satiating themselves. And NOT men. The revolution has been stylized. And I'm all the way with it.
